The Vacation Miracle

Picture this. Two families of young toddlers are on vacation together, far away from the Texas heat. The kids are restless. They are demanding snacks, screen time, and constant attention. If you are a parent, you know this feeling well (it is exhausting!).

Now, I love my son; he’s the light of my world. But we needed something to keep our kids occupied for a short decompression window, for them as much as us. We had done some research ahead of time (as we had learned to do with toddlers) and found a local indoor sandbox. We walked in, handed our sons some shovels, and were hoping for a few minutes of mindless phone scrolling before getting called in to play.

We never got called in.

For 90 minutes straight, our boys played entirely on their own. No screens. No structured games. No coaches telling them what to do. They were just little builders lost in a world of mountains, trenches, and treasure. We sat back, watched them explore, and realized we had found something truly special.

In DFW, we are always fighting the elements. One day it is 105 degrees in the shade, and the next it is pouring rain. We have maybe 2 months a year where it’s nice outside.
